  14. I had another instance yesterday of being able to solve a problem
  15. using MS-Kermit and its document files.
  16.  
  17. What happened was that our applications person had received a new
  18. computer from Compaq.  It had an ethernet card and a bunch of net
  19. software, and was supposed to work as delivered.  But she couldn't get
  20. it to work on our network, and with all the software preloaded, didn't
  21. know where to start.  As the cost of site licenses these days seems to
  22. be no manuals, she had spent all day on the phone with the Compaq
  23. distributor, who apparently knew no more than she did.

  25. When I heard of this, I brought in a disk with MSK and the MSK
  26. setup.doc.  The file showed us that TCP and ODI files had been loaded
  27. willy-nilly by the installation programs for the various software
  28. packages (or by incompetent Compaq distributor folk).  We were able to
  29. start from scratch, load the proper packet driver, and connect with
  30. Kermit in less than half an hour.  Once we had done that, we could get
  31. winsock and the rest of the programs working.

  33. Unfortunately, this site has no use for a DOS terminal program (its
  34. net interests are popmail and web surfing), and I'm sure it won't
  35. switch to Windows 95 for years, so the Columbia project will never be
  36. rewarded for the good it has done.  But without the clear instructions
  37. and "open architecture" program that MSK provides (as compared to
  38. typical Windows programs), our not-very-expert staff would have
  39. thrashed away many hours trying to solve a simple problem.
